AFN Attends White House National ConnectHome Summit

Austin Free-Net Trainer, Robin Medina, was invited to attend the White House National ConnectHome Summit on August 18 and 19.  More than 100 local and national stakeholders participated in the event. The Summit officially kicked off the beginning of the local planning aspect of the ConnectHome project– a plan to bring high-speed broadband Internet to low-income housing in 27 cities and one Native American tribal community. EveryoneOn, AFN’s broadband partner and GitHub hosted the Summit at the Google DC office.

An Austin contingency led a panel discussion about Unlocking the Connection, the Housing Authority of the City of Austin’s program to connect public housing residents. The national ConnectHome initiative is modeled after Austin’s new program. The Austin panelists included Dr. Ben Kramer, VP of Education, KLRU, Rondella Hawkins, Officer, City of Austin Telecommunications & Regulatory Affairs, Sylvia Blanco, Executive VP, Housing Authority of the City of Austin, Robin Medina, Trainer with Austin Free-Net, and Catherine Crago, Strategic Initiatives Manager for Housing Authority of the City of Austin.
