Youth Web Space Celebration

Dr. Chiquita W. Eugene, Nancy Green, Terrell and Jason Woelfel. Terrell, a Senior student, received the Certificate of Excellence for his commitment and contribution to the program.

This year, AFN had the unique opportunity to teach the next generation of technology  developers – High School students.  Through a one year grant with the City of Austin’s Health and Human Services Department and partnership with the City of Austin’s Youth and Family Services department, we offered multiple six week Website design classes in Austin and Dell Valle school districts.  The students were challenged with the task of creating a website to inform the public about health issues that impact their community.  Eighty-one students learned how to code HTML and CSS, design web pages and upload files to a web server via FTP.  Some even went beyond the basics and learned how to insert Javascript for a photo slider and mobile menu. The website topics ranged from information about High Blood Pressure to Diabetes.

On November 28, we sponsored a celebration party for our last group of students from the Opportunity Center in the Dell Valle School District. Principal Ray Macias, Jr. recognized the students for their accomplishments at a general assembly program attended by Dr. Chiquita W. Eugene, the City of Austin Youth and Family Services Initiative Manager, DeWaun Carmichael, Boys and Girls Club Director at Dell Valle High School, Nancy Green, AFN Volunteer and Outreach Manager  and AFN Instructor Jason Woelfel.  The Boys and Girls Club Director helped us recruit students for this unique opportunity at the center.

Thanks to the support of donors and volunteers, we can continue to offer advanced training opportunities to the community.  Connect with us today to make a donation or volunteer.
